I was reading about two women who’ve created an Aural Soilscapes project to listen to microbial sounds. Having written my essay about sound art and interspecies communication I was fascinated by this. Much of my research centered on and related to animals. Here is a sound artist and a biologist helping to bring communication between single-celled organisms to our attention. Microbes are crucial to the health of plants -particularly in a deteriorating climate. Biologist Ruth Schmidt started collaborating with artists such as sound artist Sandra Volny. Volny described the work with microbes as a “need to connect to the unseen, the invisible and the almost inaudible in order to weave a new tissue of relation with our environment.” While my creative project might not exactly be this, I think the underlying ideas of connectedness could transfer over.
