In my research, I came across a fascinating art piece by Bartholomäus Traubeck where he has used the year rings of a tree to function as rings on a record. Traubeck produced a record player that analyzes the rings from the trees and takes the data. The data is then interpreted into piano music.

“A tree’s year rings are analysed for their strength, thickness and rate of growth. This data serves as basis for a generative process that outputs piano music. It is mapped to a scale which is again defined by the overall appearance of the wood (ranging from dark to light and from strong texture to light texture)”

I really love how data can open doorways to create new sounds and hear new sounds from aspects of our world we take for granted. This is inspiring to me, especially when working on my max patch. The ability to take data and translate that into sound is astonishing if you can figure out how to take data and what dAta to take from the things/beings in our world.
