I have decided that utilizing MAX MSP is something that I want to get used to working with in my own art. At my previous University, I studied experimental video along with sound practices. I have some knowledge about audio and visuals in MAX and I am currently thinking about creating a patch that might apply both and can work in an interspecies composition I might make. At the moment I really like the idea of a sound portrait. I would love to create a patch that takes an image and translates it sonically. I thought maybe if I could do his I could take some of the pictures from the farm and turn some animal photos into sound. I have been doing some inquiries into how I might do this and it seems like I might need to pull some kind of data from a photo/camera and decide on what that data might be. I’ve found some videos where people use face recognition to create music. In this video below face recognition/movement is used to play the piano. This isn’t quite what I’m looking for but, definitely in the right direction.
I have been inspired previously by artists who have used MAX in their work to create extremely interesting sounds. Radiohead in their album A Moon Shaped Pool used max msp to create unique sounds for the album. One particular song called “The Present Tense” uses a vocal looper. I think I might experiment with this type of effect in max myself.
