Too Bee is set in an environment that couldn’t be more different than London. It has been hard to capture field recordings without also getting sounds of cars or the city. I managed to come across a couple of Bees and record some buzzing. While editing I took the best parts of the recording and looped it to get an ongoing buzz for the game. EQ has been extremely helpful for cutting out most of the other sounds. I am very happy with the simple Bee noise I currently have in the game.
Recently I have been playing around with Fmod to try to improve the spatialization of the bee sound. In Too Bee the player is listening at an angle above the bee character. Going forward I want to make sure that the positioning of the sound in the game matches the visual in this way. I have been experimenting and reading about FMod’s different automation effects. I think for the buzzing of the bee it makes the most sense to use the elevation effect because it positions the listener above the event at an angle.
